Our Name
- Na Kama Hele brings together citizens who want a better pedestrian
environment in communities across the state of Hawai`i.
`Ohana
- Any person wishing to travel by foot, wheelchair, bicycle, in-line
skates, skateboard, rapid transit, or other human powered means.
Our role and purpose
- To educate
- To advocate, and,
- Promote a culture of concern and care within the whole community
- For the rights and responsibilities of pedestrians and our `Ohana.
- To establish social streets and pathways
- In order to provide all street users with opportunities for
- Exchange, social contact, fitness, safety, and mobility.
Our Goals
- A pedestrian -friendly State of Hawai`i, a place where:
- Walking is the preferred transportation mode for short trips and trips
linked to transit.
- Children walk to school and play activities.
- Persons who are elderly can maintain their independence and mobility.
- Persons with disabilities can participate in community wide activities.
- Pedestrian networks are accessible to all, easy to use, and connect
to places people want to go.
- Pedestrians are the paramount mmode in a heirarchy of supporting transportation
modes.
- Pedestrians and other `Ohana members have equitable access to government
resources and services.
- The built environment provides good places for everyone's use.
- "Urban lungs" are created by converting the road network
into a street network with landscaping and greenbelts.
- Proximity is favored over regional mobility during land use planning
(i.e., people live in the areas they transport to most often).
- Pedestrian improvements should be economical, and,
- Local governements are committed to reducing reliance on the single
occupant automobile.
Our Mission
- Na Kama Hele seeks a Hawai`i that is walkable
and pedestrian oriented through the following objectives:
- The continual improvement of pedestrian safety, amentity and access.
- The promotion of walking as a legitimate transportation mode and an
important health, economical and social activity.
- The inclusion of pedestrian safety, amenity and access provisions in
all land use and transportation plans, capital improvement projects, maintenance
budgets, and traffic laws.
- All people, despite their age or immediate or potential disability,
have the right to expect towns and developments to be places of easy social
contact, exchange, and convenience; whether shopping, working or socializing.
- Research and publications into all aspects of the aforementioned objectives,
and
- To build a proactive constituency and private partnerships within the
state.
